Friday Night (23/02/2018) – A Lot of Fly

Friday Night (23/02/2018) – A Lot of Fly

Friday’s session included a 400 and 200 FR swim, and whilst not timed, I did do a bit of checking the clock – to compare against what’s happening on Wednesdays. And the result was that I was swimming at a “good pace”. The 400 was a little over 5:30 and the 200, well that was (an impressive) 2:30!

And in between these bits of fast swimming was a lot of Fly! Because the whole set was “a bit of free followed by a bit of something else (fly)”

Wednesday Night (21/02/2018) – Moderate Timed 800

Wednesday Night (21/02/2018) – Moderate Timed 800

This Wednesday saw a timed 800M as the main set. Given the “debacle” of last week’s 400M this was an opportunity to swim a bit better than last time. And I did. But it still wasn’t particularly speedie. Perhaps that’s because of the drag shorts – who knows – but the headline time was 11:24 which is 1:25.5 pace compared to 1:27 pace for the 400. As I said not great – but a bit better…

Can you improve on 1 – 2 sessions a week?

Can you improve on 1 – 2 sessions a week?

So here’s an open question:

“Is it possible to improve your swimming by doing just one / two sessions a week?”

My answer is yes, but with caveats as to how much improvement you can make and so forth.   The reason for the question is that I currently do just that – swim once or twice a week.  I have pretty good technique and so am “holding my own” with my peers.  But I have succumbed to the danger of slipping into a habit of keeping within my comfort zone.  Which is fine, because it keeps me fit – but doesn’t make me faster.

This last Wednesday I decided to put some more effort in, which was noticed by my lane-buddies.  So I really need to keep that effort going, from now on – to make it the new norm.

First time to keep this new norm is tonight.  Friday evenings are tougher sessions – because I often have to mix it with the speedies and that reminds me just how far off being a speedie I am.

So this is going to be the home of my web site.  I’ve tried to do this a number of times over the past few years and never really managed to get enough enthusiasm to do anything worthwhile.

Just don’t hold your breath.
